Oleocanthal Extra Virgin Olive Oil – High-Phenolic EVOO & Cancer Cell Research

Oleocanthal is a naturally occurring phenolic compound found in extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) that has attracted considerable scientific interest for its potential biological effects. Research published in Molecular and Cellular Oncology investigated how oleocanthal affects certain cancer cells in laboratory conditions.

In the 2015 study by researchers from Rutgers University and Hunter College, oleocanthal was found to disrupt the membranes of lysosomes inside certain cancer cells. This process, known as lysosomal membrane permeabilization (LMP), can release enzymes that contribute to the rapid death of the affected cancer cells.

The researchers examined breast, pancreatic, and prostate cancer cell lines and observed that oleocanthal caused cancer cells to break down significantly faster than the typical timeframe associated with programmed cell death (apoptosis). In the laboratory experiments, the researchers also reported that several types of healthy, non-cancerous cells were not affected in the same way.

Oleocanthal is one of the many naturally occurring polyphenols in extra virgin olive oil. It is particularly associated with the characteristic peppery or throat-stinging sensation of some high-phenolic EVOOs. Beyond oleocanthal, EVOO contains a diverse range of phenolic compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

These findings provide an interesting insight into the biological activity of olive oil's phenolic compounds. However, laboratory findings involving isolated cells do not establish that consuming extra virgin olive oil can treat, prevent, or cure cancer in humans. Further research is required to determine whether the mechanisms observed in laboratory studies have meaningful effects in living organisms.
